UPVC and composite doors are fitted on thousands of properties across Earlsfield. They are generally excellent for security and insulation, but when the mechanism goes wrong, they can be surprisingly difficult to deal with without the right knowledge and tools.

The most common problem we see is a multipoint lock that has seized. You lift the handle, turn the key, and nothing happens. Or the key turns but the locking points do not engage. Sometimes only the top or bottom hooks lock, leaving the middle unsecured. Other times the door locks fine but will not unlock, which means you are trapped inside your own property. None of these are problems you should try to force your way through, because forcing a multipoint mechanism when it is misaligned almost always makes the damage worse and more expensive to repair.

Why UPVC doors fail

UPVC door problems usually come down to one of a few root causes:

●       The door has dropped slightly on its hinges, pulling the hooks and bolts out of alignment with the keeps in the frame

●       The gearbox (the centre case that drives the locking points) has worn out internally. This is the single most common mechanical failure on multipoint doors

●       The euro cylinder has been attacked, snapped, or simply worn smooth so the key no longer grips

●       The handle spindle has broken inside the mechanism, disconnecting the handle from the lock

●       The hinges themselves have sagged or loosened, pulling the whole door out of square

●       The locking points have corroded or seized from lack of maintenance

In many cases the problem starts small. The handle gets a bit stiff, the key needs an extra wiggle, or you have to lift the door slightly to get it to lock. These are warning signs. If you notice any of them, it is much better to get them looked at early than to wait until the mechanism fails completely and you cannot get in or out.

We strip back the problem methodically rather than guessing. Sometimes it is just a cylinder swap, which takes ten minutes and solves the issue completely. Other times the full gearbox needs replacing, which means removing the handle set, extracting the old mechanism strip, and fitting a compatible replacement. In some cases the door just needs its hinges adjusted and the keeps repositioned to bring everything back into alignment.

UPVC door security upgrades

If your UPVC door has a basic euro cylinder with no anti-snap protection, it is vulnerable to a common break-in method where the cylinder is snapped out of the door in seconds. We fit anti-snap, anti-bump, anti-pick cylinders as standard replacements. It is a small upgrade that makes a significant difference to your security, and it only adds a few pounds to the cost of the job.
